Do I need special gear?
Very little. Polar Latitudes provides waterproof rubber boots for all shore landings. The expedition jacket is included in your gift collection. Bring warm mid-layers, waterproof pants, hat, gloves, and wool socks. A full packing list is sent upon booking.
Do I need to be physically fit?
Reasonable mobility is sufficient. Shore landings involve stepping in/out of Zodiac boats (crew assists) and walking on uneven terrain. Most landings are accessible to anyone with reasonable fitness. Discuss specific considerations on your discovery call.
What about the Drake Passage?
It can be rough — or remarkably calm ("Drake Lake"). The Ocean Albatros has stabilizers, and the ship's medical team provides seasickness medication. Most travelers find their sea legs within the first day.
Is travel insurance required?
Strongly recommended — essentially essential. Look for a policy including medical evacuation coverage. Emergency evacuation from Antarctica is extraordinarily expensive without it. Insurance providers can be discussed on your discovery call.
Can I pay in installments?
Yes. A 20% deposit (minimum $2,000) reserves your berth. A payment plan for the remaining balance can be structured on your discovery call with Ayo. The earlier you book, the more flexibility in your payment timeline.
Do you need experience to travel to Antarctica?
No prior expedition experience is required. Our journey is designed for curious explorers who want to experience the beauty of Antarctica safely with expert guidance.
What wildlife will we see in Antarctica?
During November, visitors often see penguins nesting, seals resting along the ice, and whales traveling through Antarctic waters.
Where does the Antarctica expedition depart from?
We fly into Buenos Aires, Argentina and continue to Ushuaia, Argentina, the southernmost city in the world and the gateway to Antarctica.
